Obituary for Patricia "Pat" Schultz

Patricia "Pat" Schultz
Pat was born in Pembroke, Ontario on February 22, 1958. By 1960 her parents, Bruce and Helen Middleton, and older brother Steve had moved to Wainwright where they had two more children, Jeanie and Gwen (Fisher).

After high school Pat attended the University of Oregon for one year and then transferred to the University of Alberta where she graduated with a B. Ed in 1980. She married Doug Dalton in 1979 and had their daughter Jamie in 1983. In 1984 they moved back home to Wainwright and Pat worked at the Hutterite colony for one year before becoming the special education teacher at the Wainwright Elementary School. Their son Sean was born in 1988. Pat completed her Masters degree in 1995 as she was working as the Vice Principal at Manville School. In 1997 she returned to Wainwright as the Director of Student Services for Buffalo Trail Regional School Division.

Pat moved to Edmonton when she was seconded by the Government Special Education Branch. Shortly after that she got a job as the Executive Assistant in Teacher Welfare at the Alberta Teachers’ Association. In 2002 she was promoted to Coordinator of Operations there. In 2008 Pat took some time off to be with her mom and then pursued a career as Associate Registrar at the University of Alberta. In 2009 she married Blaine, the love of her life. In 2012 she began working on her PhD in Education Policy Studies at the U of A. In 2014 Pat was hit by cancer once again and decided to retire to West Kelowna with Blaine in order to enjoy family and friends and life and love.

After shining bravery and courage and teaching us all her final lesson, Patricia "Pat" Schultz passed away on June 24, 2017.

Pat is survived by her siblings, Steve Middleton (Darlene), Jeanie Middleton, Gwen Fisher (Ed), half brother Marty Ricketts; her daughter Jamie Hodge (Dan) and her two grandchildren, Reid and Dalton, and her son Sean Dalton. Blaine’s children became an integral part of Pat’s life and survive her: Naomi Dobler (Carl) and granddaughter Scarlet; Mike Schultz (Ieva), and Dave Schultz (Andrea). Pat is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pat was predeceased by her mother Helen Middleton, father Bruce Middleton, half sister Tara, and her grand-nephew Letley.

Pat was pragmatic and loved to solve problems. Her passion was working with others and helping them be the best they could be. She loved her family and friends with all her heart. Cancer never defined her but did drive her and she had an incredibly positive outlook on life. Choose to be happy was her motto and she lived by it.

A Celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Wainwright Elk’s Hall. Family & friends are invited to stay for happy hour and refreshments at the Elk Hall following the celebration of Pat's life.
