It is with sadness that we announce the death of Slavie Hewko, husband, father & Dyido. Slavie passed away peacefully with family at his side on October 29, 2017 at Provost Continuing Care Centre.
Slavie was born on May 18, 1931 at the Kerrobert Hospital. He attended school at the country school of Cactus Lake until he left to help his parents on the farm. He was delighted when his dad purchased a tractor so he did not have to work behind the horses anymore. Slavie took a correspondence course on diesel motors from The Chicago Vocational Training College so that in the early years he was able to repair his own tractor.
Slavie met his wife of 61 years, Naden Bochar, who was teaching at Ollenberger School. They were married July 12, 1956 and farmed on the home place near Cactus Lake. They were blessed with four sons and four daughters. While raising their family, Slavie was active in his community: he served twenty years as a councillor for the municipality of Heart’s Hill, was a 4-H leader in the Denzil Beef Club, a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was on Parish Council as a parishioner of Denzil Sacred Heart Church. Slavie retired from farming in 2005; they lived on the farm until spring of 2009, then moved to Macklin, Sask. Slavie was always proud of the achievements of his children and grandchildren. He liked to play cards with relatives and neighbours. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching sports on T.V. especially hockey and baseball.
Slavie leaves to mourn his wife, Naden and their children and families: children of Shirley & Donald Parkinson, Sarah (Tyson) Smith, Charlotte; Zoe Parkinson-Fisher (Quinton+); Terry (Michelle) Hewko, Lucas, Alexandria, Nick; Dennis (Jackie) Hewko, Ashley (Aaron) Oliver Smith, Brenden, Dylan; Mariann (Judson) Rich, Cameron, Courtney; Noreen (Chuck) Garon, Matthew, Christian; Janet (Rob) Rodriguez, Tyler, Kaitlyn; Allen (Fay) Hewko, Craig, Ann; Tim (Cathy) Hewko, Zachary, Kelsie, Joshua, Hailey; sisters in law, Olga (Garth) Johnson and Helen (Guy+) Lipsey & family; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
