Alexander "Alex" Schamber
Alexander Schamber was born in the Macklin Hospital on September 21, 1930, the only one of his family to have been born in a hospital. Alex was the youngest of 10 children (3 sisters and 7 brothers) born to Konstantin and Julianna Schamber.
Born during the depression years of the 1930’s, times were tough. Alex eventually took over the family farm in Altario at the age of 19 where they farmed for 17 years, until they moved to Provost in 1973. Alex was able to secure work with the Gregory’s and their Insurance & Funeral Home business until his retirement to the Provost Hillcrest Lodge in 2004, where he continued to fold obituary cards.
Sports were a big part of Alex’s life. He played baseball with his 5 brothers and played for the Altario Mets for 25 years. He very much enjoyed watching his kids and grandchildren play ball or hockey and there were seldom Blue Jays, Oilers or curling game on TV that was missed.
Alex passed away peacefully on July 28, 2018 at the Provost Health Centre at the age of 87 years.
Alex leaves his four children, Keith (Denise) and their son, Bryan; Jeff; Sonia (Terry) Schneider and their three children, Calvin, and twins Kendall and Kyle and Danita (Ken) Fraser and their three children, Jordan, Travis and Kayla as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Alex was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Vicky on December 16, 2004.
Many thanks to the warm and loving care given to Alex by Hillcrest Lodge staff and to Dr. Milan for many years of kind and caring medical assistance.
