Obituary for Daniel "Dan" Robert Nish

Daniel "Dan" Robert Nish
Dan was born on March 4, 1944 at Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan to William and Evangeline Nish, the first of 7 children. He graduated from Bonnie Doon High School in 1962.

Dan went on to work in financial institutions where he met and married Shirley Taron of Barrhead, Alberta in 1968. They moved to Dawson Creek where he changed his vocation to telecommunications. It was there that they started their family and their two children were born, Danica Marsha (Dec. 21, 1970) and Marty Taron (June 17, 1973). They then moved to Alberta, first to Edson, then to the log house in Carrot Creek before finally settling in Lloydminster.

Dan and Shirley were married 19 years before Shirley lost her long battle with breast cancer in 1987. Three years later Dan’s long time friend Francy reintroduced Dan to a woman from his past, Kaye Parke (Johnson) both having lost their respective spouses in 1987. Dan’s and Kaye’s renewed relationship became a 19 year marriage which beautifully blended two families into one. Danica finally had the sisters she had always wanted while Patti and Cindy finally had the brother they had longed for.

In the summer you would find Dan tending to his yard and garden, but if he was not there, that just meant he was on the golf course, paddling his kayak on a local lake, attending Lea Park Rodeo or proudly watching and supporting his grandchildren as they participated in their various sports. Papa was their #1 fan. In the winter he would also be in the stands watching his grandchildren, curling in the local league, watching curling on television, listening to music or reading. Dan was a life long learner and, most importantly, a devoted child of God. This, above all else, is his defining characteristic, or in Dan’s words, “The most important thing.”

Dan passed away on August 26, 2018 at the Provost Health Centre at the age of 74 years after a brief battle with cancer.

Dan is survived by his children, Danica (Shane Teague), Marty (Kari), Patti (Chad Thirsk), Cindy (Deon Sieben) and grandchildren, Vanessa, Brynn, Deegan, William, Julia, Jonah and Elizabeth. Dan is also survived by his six siblings Sheila, Bev, Brian, Doug, Gloria, Gary and their respective spouses and children.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, William and Evangeline; first wife, Shirley and second wife, Kaye.
