Obituary of Edwin George Tameling

Please share a memory of Edwin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edwin George Tameling was born December 10, 1935 to Emma Schmedes and Joseph Tameling, who were immigrants from Germany.

They lived on the farm 4 miles east of Muenster, Sask.  He took grades 1-9 at St. Francis School just north of the farm.

Ed then finished school at St. Thomas Moore College for grades 10-12 and graduated in 1952.

He worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Humboldt right after high school and was transferred to several bank locations across Saskatchewan.

In 1956, he decided to go with a friend to Burnaby, B.C. to work at a lumber mill, watching the controls through the night shift.  Realizing he wanted something more challenging and fulfilling in life and having saved up enough for school at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, he enrolled in teacher’s college, studying History and English.  With his teaching degree and with a friend, he accepted a position at St. Mary's School in Cosine, Sask.  It was there that he met his wife, Leola “Lee” Weinkauf after teaching two of her younger sisters, Kathy and Ida.

Edwin and Leola were married at St. Peter's Church, south of Macklin, Sask. on July 30,1966 (they were married for 26 days shy of 59 years).

With Lee's job at the Royal Bank, Ed began teaching in Saskatoon.  In 1969, with their first son on the way, Ed took a teaching job in Provost, AB at St. Thomas Aquinas School.  Sheldon was born in 1970, Keenan in 1972 and Lyndon in 1976.

Soon after taking the teaching job, Ed became the principal of STA and did that for 12 years.  In 1981, Ed took the promotion of deputy superintendent for East Central Catholic Schools and the family moved to Wainwright, AB.  In the 20+ years the family was in Wainwright, Ed served both the church and school communities.  He established the "School of Hope", an online school in the division which still exists today. When Blessed Sacrament Parish was without a priest for a few years, Ed led the church community lay leadership while at the same time taking on sole temporary superintendent duties for the school district.  Ed also led the Knights of Columbus in both Provost and Wainwright over the years as a 4th degree Knight.

He balanced family, faith and community.  With much on his plate, he never left a job undone.  Ed retired in 1998 and spent his retirement years enjoying travel, family, grandchildren and community.

Ed and Lee were also very proud of supporting Basil Imma Royappan, a sponsored child from India through his whole life, including through his post secondary education.  Ed will forever be missed and forever loved by all who knew him.

Ed will forever loved and missed by his wife of nearly 59 years, Lee; three sons and their families, Sheldon (Tina) and their children, Jack and Geordie; Keenan (Melanie) and their children, Noah, Emma, Kyle, Ava and Kayla; Lyndon and his children, Trinity and Paityn.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Ed on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Provost, Alberta with Father Christopher officiating.

For those unable to attend, a livestream will be available of the funeral service and accessible through the GFH website at the time of the service.
