Obituary of Marlene Daphne Smith

Please share a memory of Marlene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Marlene Daphne Smith, aged 89, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Macklin, Saskatchewan, on October 3, 2025.

She is survived by her sisters, Ivy Tunstall of Brooks, Alberta, and Carol Campbell of Bow Island, Alberta; her brother, Conrad (Loreen) Smith of Evesham, Saskatchewan; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Marlene was predeceased by her parents, George and Amy Smith; her infant sister, Myra; her sister, Joyce Arthur; brothers-in-law, Russell Arthur, John Tunstall, and Donald Campbell; and her nephew, Murray Campbell.

Born on May 17, 1936, in Macklin, Saskatchewan, Marlene spent most of her life in nearby Evesham. She was proud of her time working at the medical centre in Bow Island, Alberta, and later in Unity, Saskatchewan, for Dr. Doyle. Marlene also served as postmistress for Canada Post in Evesham from 1983 until 1991, when the post office was permanently closed.

For many years, Marlene faithfully wrote the “Evesham News” column for the Macklin Mirror, keeping her community connected and informed. She maintained an immaculate home and loved spending time in her yard—especially raking the autumn leaves from the beautiful trees surrounding her house. An avid baker, Marlene delighted in providing treats for the “coffee shop/curling rink” crowd in Evesham. She loved cats, Avon, and kept meticulous scrapbooks, calendars, and journals documenting the life and events of her community.

Marlene lived in her cherished childhood home in Evesham until 2023, when she moved to Macklin. After a brief stay at Villa Marie, she took residence at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

Marlene will be fondly remembered by the caregivers at St. Joseph’s for her quick wit, sense of humour, and feisty one-liners—always keeping everyone on their toes. Her family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received there. She will be dearly missed.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Health Centre Activity Department or the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.

Friends and family are invited to gather on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at the Evesham Rec. Centre for a time of fellowship and remembering.
