Obituary of Simon Gabriel Fleck

Simon Gabriel “Gabe” Fleck was born in Provost on November 13, 1937. He grew up on the family farm homestead 4 miles southeast of Bodo. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Gabe attended Bodo school for grades 1–9. At this time, Provost Public School was being built. So a few of the boys from that area got hired to help build this school that summer. It was at this time dad decided he did not want to be a brick layer for the rest of his life.

He attended Consort school for grade 10, Provost school was now completed so back to Provost for grades 11 & 12. In Provost, he rented a room on the west side of town (Mrs. Scheck's house). It was so cold there in winter that the wash basin water froze and you could see your breath in every room of the house!

After graduation Dad moved to Edmonton to work at a cement company installing steps. But in the winter of 1961 Dad and Bob Wetzstein made the decision to head to the ice fields and cut block ice for 90 cents an hour. Then back to the farm for the next three seasons—spring, summer and fall.

Dad met mom at a dance in Bodo on a blind date; they dated 4 years and were married in June of 1964. They farmed on the family farm and they had 4 children.

He passed away on December 1, 2025 at the Provost Health Centre at the age of 88 years.

Gabe will be forever loved and missed by his wife of 61 years, Angie; children, Myrna (Pat) and their children, Lyndsay (Anil), Lisa and Lauren; Murray (Trish) and their children, Curtis (Courtney) and Tanner (Tamara); Lorna (Rob) and their children, Jessie (Austin), Logan (Isha) and †Brad; great grandchildren, Sadie and Lainie Fleck; sisters, Adeline and Loretta; and sisters in law, Nellie and Josephine.

Gabe was predeceased by his son, Brad in 2012; parents, Katie (Gramlich) and Peter Fleck; brothers, Arnold, Gilbert and Wilf; brothers‑in‑law, Adam Fisher, Joe Hummel, Peter Scherger and Albert Weinkauf; and parents in law, John and Paula Weinkauf.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Provost, Alberta with Father Avinash Francis SAC officiating. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship and refreshments at the Provost Recreation & Culture Centre.
