Remembrance of Gerry and Irene Motta. Gerry and Irene were the first new friends Shirley, and I made in the church in Red deer in the summer of ’63. Though we moved several times over the next 8 years before settling in Penticton, our friendship deepened and grew over a span of 62 years. For more than forty years we enjoyed summer visits together, often with shared wedding anniversaries and reunions in August together with our families. He and Irene became surrogate Aunt and Uncle to our children. Gerry and I enjoyed many fishing trips together in my Gerry built Newfoundland dory gift, and later in the “Wenona Ann” on many lakes, including the Lesser Slave, Kootenay, Lake Diefenbaker, the Shuswap’s as well as drift fishing the North Saskatchewan river in east central Saskatchewan. Gerry epitomized the Biblically faithful believers in the transition period from “This Age” and “The Age to Come”, the New Covenant Age of faith in God through the fulfilled work of Jesus Christ where, thereafter, the Gospel was spread by fishermen. He transitioned from “the black sheep” of the family to a well-loved family man, respected and appreciated community member. In the turbulent 80’s He gracefully transitioned from a prosperous home builder to a successful community servant leader serving for many years as a well-loved Boy Scout troop leader and construction trades instructor at Red Deer College where he became a greatly appreciated teacher to the indigenous native students, respecting their sense of time and seasons. He was honored to be allowed to be a fisherman among their people and in the lakes of their communities. Gerry will be well remember and missed! He has now been welcomed into his masters home with the words, “ Well done, good and faithful servant --- “ (read Matt. 25:21). We are consoled with the words from Psalm 116:15, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints”. Victor Mollerup.
