Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. When we've been here ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we'd first begun.

During the last week of life, Lila asked to be baptized. She knew that she would soon be "going home." Todd Froland sang this beautiful gospel song while his brother Wade accompanied on his guitar. The words are inspirational and soothing to the soul.
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.
When my way grows drear
Precious Lord linger near
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I'm tired, I'm weak, I'm lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.

Lila Ruth Freestone was born March 13, 1924 to Maree and Wallace Freestone. Lila was tiny at birth and lost weight while in hospital. As she gained strength, Maree said Lila was like a little doll with curly auburn hair. She was small enough to walk right under the kitchen table. Lila was very active and loved the outdoors and was so happy when she was big enough to help her Dad with the chores, pumping water, bringing in wood and when she was older, milking cows. While very young Lila made two trips to the Provost Hospital. While playing on a shed, Lila fell through the roof fracturing her arm. When she was six years old Lila's appendix ruptured. It was a rough drive over unpaved roads to the hospital from their farm west of Cadogan. One can only imagine the pain that she suffered. In later years, when asked if there was anything in her life that she considered a miracle, Lila said that her survival of that event was "a miracle".

Love is lovlier the second time around
Just as wonderful with both feet on the ground
It's the second time you hear your love song sung
Makes you think that love, like youth, is wasted on the young.
Love's more comfortable the second time you fall
Like a friendly home the second time you call
Who can say what led us to this miracle we've found?
There are those who'll bet love comes but once, and yet
I'm oh, so glad we met the second time around.
Lila and Clayton fell in love and moved the family to Paradise Valley where we met new Aunts and Uncles and cousins who welcomed us with open arms.
Clayton bought us ice skates and we spent many hours ice skating in winter. In the summer he bought us a bike that he helped us learn to ride and we took turns riding it in the summer. When we operated the cafe, we helped unload freight and waited on customers and washed dishes.
We were a family again!

When Mom was asked what she would like for her 87th birthday, she asked that all of her daughters be with her. We had a "#1 Mom" badge for Mom and each daughter had a "#1 Daughter badge." Joan has always had a special place in Mom's heart and we were so happy that Joan was able to join us, also Tim, Tiffany, Kent, Jenelle, Kory, Dixon and Dakota. We had lots of fun with many small gifts for Mom to open. Joan brought a lovely homemade chiffon cake and Tiffany made and iced her famous cupcakes and we had a bakery carrot cake, too. When we were children, Mom would always make us our favourite cake and decorate it and let us choose what we would like for supper. As we grew up and left home, she always remembered our birthdays. Her cards were always sent well in advance in case the mail was slow and when she sent a present, it was so well wrapped with tape and paper to keep it safe that we had quite a time getting it open.
In this picture are Joan, Deb, Brenda, Lila, Norma and Judy.
We love you "#1 Mom."
We will always remember you on March 13 and wish you were here with us again.

This picture of Lila was taken in about 1955. That is Brenda peeking out of the car window. It was taken by our house in Edmonton in the Beverly district.
In 1950 the song "It Is No Secret What God Can Do" was written. It was a favourite of Mom's.
This song was played as the family followed her casket at her funeral on August 20, 2011. The words are very comforting and are as follows:
The chimes of time ring out the news,
another day is through.
Someone slipped and fell-was that someone you?
You may have longed for added strength,
your courage to renew.
Do not be disheartened, for I have news for you.
It is no secret what God can do,
what He's done for others, He'll do for you.
With arms wide open, He'll pardon you.
It is no secret what God can do.
There is no night for in His light
you'll never walk alone;
Always feel at home, wherever you may go.
There is no power can conquer you
while God is at your side.
Take Him at His promise, don't run away and hide.

Lila and Rex were married on March 1, 1941. Lila said she hoped the marriage would last forever like her parent's marriage. Instead, they drifted apart and in 1956 the marriage ended. This picture was taken by a photographer as Mom and Dad walked along Jasper Avenue in Edmonton. As a ten year old, it was a time of questions for me. I told my step mother, Pat that I thought that Dad did not love us or Mom. She said, "Your Dad loved you and your sisters and he loved your Mom and he missed all of you very much." When I visited my Dad in his final days in hospital in Edmonton, he told me that he was a lucky man to have had the love of two good women.

Yesterday I went out to pull a few stray weeds from the area where we have stone at the front of our house. In the 16 years we have lived here nothing has grown there but weeds since we have large evergreen trees there. As I got near our front door there was a little yellow pansy brightly showing it's face. I was so surprised to see it. August 23 is Grandma Maree Freestone's birthday. She always planted pansies by her house and had little bouquets of them in her living room. Since Mom's favourite color is yellow it reminded me of my mother also.
The picture above is of Lila, Brenda, Judy, Maree and Norma at the Freestone Homestead. Maree had made our coats. Maree would take apart an old coat and without benefit of a pattern make it into a coat for one of her grandchildren. Lila also made our dresses and play clothes and made her own patterns.

One of the earliest memories I have of Grandma was when my late Grandpa Clayton and I were out in the field during the seeding and haying seasons. When coffee break or lunchtime came around, Grandma would meet us at the tractor, full course meal in hand prepared at the house. We would spend the next half hour talking about how the work was going and what we had to fix and didn't have to fix for that matter. The food was always delicious. As I got old enough to start doing some of the field work myself. Grandpa and I would drive home to their house and Grandma would have the same meal all ready for us so we could eat and get back to the field quickly. After Grandpa Clayton passed on, if Mom and Dad were not home when I came in from the field, I would almost always go over to Grandma's and, like she had this sixth sense, would have the table set and food ready for me. In later years when Grandma moved into her place in town, I would try to get over there as much as I could. Work kept me on the road most days ( sometime nights) so I couldn't see her as often as I would have liked. When I could get over there, she would have something cool to drink in the fridge, the odd cookie, square or piece of cake, and would almost always give me a lickin' at crib. We sometimes would go out for dinner if time allowed and on my birthday almost every year without fail, she would whip up a batch of her delicious oven BBQ'ed pork chops, mashed potatoes, veggies, homemade bread, and usually the customary cake and ice cream for dessert. A few months before she got diagnosed with her illness, I remember how her eyes lit up when I brought Jess over to meet her for the first time. I still well up thinking about it. She was so happy that we found each other and was looking forward to the wedding even though she knew she probably wasn't going to be around to see it in person. I know she will be there in spirit. Grandma, you were an incredible, kind, caring, genuine, hard-working,courageous compassionate and loving person. I am glad and honored to have been able to have known you for as long as I have. You have taught be a great deal about family, life, love, others, and myself. You will be forever loved, forever missed, and never can be replaced. The world is a lesser place with you gone. Rest In Peace Grandma, your legacy will never be forgotten. You are not suffering anymore, and you will be thought about everyday by those who knew and love you.

Over the past few years I've really come to know myself better and I've started to realize that so many of my talents were inherited from my Grandmother. Grandma Benner was never too busy to spend time with me and she always wanted to bake and do crafts with me. I remember one time we were visiting at the farm I wanted to have pierced ears so bad but I was too young still. Instead, she helped me to make homemade crafty clip on earrings. Jenelle and I both wanted to make them and as Grandma was helping us I noticed that something was wrong with her hands but I was too young to understand that it was her arthritis that was bothering her knuckles. When I think back on it now, she was rubbing her hands through quite a bit of the craft making time but she wanted to share her talents with us that it didn't matter that her hands hurt. It was more important to her that she was spending time with us and creating memories we will never forget. I have a love of sewing, crafting, music, and baking and it all reminds me of you, Grandma.

When I was born Mom was only 21 years old. Brenda came along 18 months later and then Norma 18 months after that. We had no running water or electricity but we always looked squeaky clean in photos. Brenda, Norma and I were always dressed neatly in dresses that Mom had sewed for us late at night after her housework was done. Each dress would be made with the same pattern adjusted to fit us perfectly and each one in a different color.
Mom also had talent with our hair, it was neatly brushed and often braided and coiled around our heads in a very elegant fashion.
Mom learned to play the piano by ear. She had a couple lessons from Alfred McNalley in cording. She would listen to a song on the radio and then pick out the tune and would soon be playing it on our old piano.
Mom made the flakiest pie crust and the fluffiest buns and the smell of buns baking will always remind me of her.
