Hilda Wetzstein

Obituary of Hilda Dianne Wetzstein

Please share a memory of Hilda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Hilda was born on December 23, 1944, in Provost, Alberta and was the youngest daughter of Walter and Pansy Hicks. Hilda lived on the farm near Sounding Lake. When it was time to begin school, she started her classes by correspondence until grade 4, where she began bussing 44 miles for the next two years. After these two years, she boarded in Provost with her Aunt Lizzie and then Mr. & Mrs. Carl Rud until she completed her education.

Following her schooling, Hilda went on to work for Mrs. Joan Fraser, helping with housework and taking care of three boys and one girl. Eventually, Hilda got a job at Hillcrest Lodge as a maid and did this until moving to Fort Saskatchewan with her cousins, Donald & Betty Edwards, to take a business course in the city.

In 1964, she moved back to her hometown and married Edward Wetzstein on August 22, 1964. Following the wedding, the couple moved to Edmonton for a short period of time, before returning home to Provost once again. Hilda and Edward had two children, Janet and Jimmy. Once the kids were old enough, Hilda was ready to get back to work and started her employment for Joan Brouwer at the Provost Bakery. She continued here until an opening came up at the Provost Post Office where she worked for the next 13 ½ years. Following this, she worked at the Greenhead Motel for another 4 ½ years before becoming sick and having to take some time off. She re-entered work once more and spent some time at the A & W and drove the Provost Handi Van, which she really enjoyed.

Edward retired from work and shortly after took sick, so Hilda decided to quit work once more to take care of Edward until his passing on January 15, 2009. After Edward’s passing, Hilda continued taking care of her mother, Pansy, until her passing on October 14, 2011. In June of 2012, Hilda sold her house and moved to Camrose where she took on a volunteer position at Habitat for Humanity Restore.

Throughout the years, Hilda became a grandma to Clara, Thomas, Justin and Bethany. She also became a great grandma to Walker, Adrianna, and Natalie.

Hilda passed away on January 17, 2025, at the Louise Jensen Care Centre in Camrose, Alberta at the age of 80 years.

She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Janet and Jimmy (Debbie); grandchildren, Clara (Randy), Thomas (Tina), Justin, and Bethany; great grandchildren, Walker, Adrianna, and Natalie; sisters in law, Leona (Wendelin) Walz, Dorothy Klein, Linda Wetzstein, Lorraine Wetzstein, and Donna (Lyle) Campbell.
