Obituary of Gilbert Edmund Fleck
Please share a memory of Gilbert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gilbert, son of Peter and Catherine (nee Gramlich) Fleck was born on April 3, 1932 in Provost, Alberta. Gilbert grew up with three brothers and two sisters and they were a fun family.
Gilbert married Dorothy Walz on October 23, 1956. Together they made a home in Hayter, Alberta and raised their four children, one son and three daughters. In 1975, Gilbert and Dorothy built their first home east of Hayter and in 1989 sold the acreage and moved to Provost.
Dad was a grain buyer for 20 years and then worked several more years for Norcen Energy before retiring.
Dad had a gift of music and could play several instruments but his favourite was the accordion. He was the church organist for 30 years and had his own band for many years - playing polka music for local dances. He enjoyed fishing and watching sports and in his youth played baseball for the Bodo ball team as a catcher and umped in later years. He had a good sense of humour and enjoyed meeting people and visits with friends and extended family. Dad had a strong work ethic that we respected and was an excellent provider and handyman around the house.
Gilbert was unwell for many years but stayed home as long as he could with Dorothy's help. Last year as a result of a fall, he was moved to Provost Long Term Care where he passed away peacefully on April 19, 2016.
Gilbert will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 60 years, Dorothy; children, Glen (Cris) and their children, Joel (Stephanie) and Ryan; Debbie; Joan (Dean) Fahner and their children, Teri and Kelsey; Dana (Mark) Gray; brothers, Wilfred (Marge)and Gabe (Angie); sisters, Adeline Fisher and Loretta (Joe) Hummel; sister in law, Ida Fleck; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Gilbert was predeceased by his parents, Peter & Catherine; brother, Arnold; and brother in law, Adam Fisher.
