Obituary of Roy Arthur Scammell
Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roy Arthur Scammell was born on March 16, 1938 in Ridgedale, Saskatchewan. He was the fourth of five children born to Sydney and Ivy Scammell. Roy married Edith Kreiser on May 18, 1962 and together they raised their family of three boys and one girl on the farm near Cadogan, Alberta.
Roy lived and ranched for most of his life south of Cadogan and enjoyed all aspects of the lifestyle and way of life. Together with Edith, Roy always made time for friends and family; they enjoyed watching the kids and grandchildren play sports whether it was ball, curling, volleyball, hockey, football or basketball. When watching the granddaughters rodeo Roy would 'smile big' as he told stories of his own barrel racing days. In his spare time, Roy loved to curl, hunt, fish, camp and play ball.
Roy was well known as the bus driver to a significant part of the community. He drove bus for over 50 years and hauled more than 3 generations of student. It was a common greeting to have the bus doors be opened followed by Roy saying "Come in if your nose is clean" or "How's your belly where the pig bit you?" He was also known for giving nicknames such as Suzy, Charlie and Snicklefritz. Regardless of how you were welcomed or what name you were called by, all of Roy's bus children were treated like one of his own.
Eventually Roy and Edith caught the "snowbug" and started to travel to Arizona for the winter enjoying newly found friends by competing in pool tournaments along with his brother, Bill. They won many titles while playing together. Roy and Bill could also be found playing softball during their winter stay.
Many knew Roy as Suzy with his caring, outgoing personality and great sense of humor and ability to tease. His presence filled the room with love and his big smile will be missed by everyone who knew him.
On July 19, 2016, surrounded by family, Roy passed away peacefully at the age of 78 years.
