Obituary of David Keith Grummett
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David Keith Grummett was born on February 8, 1953 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Harold & Josephine (nee Roth) Grummett. David grew up in the city along with his four older siblings; Art, Duane, Nori and Don. Although they were raised in the city, David always enjoyed his trips to the family farm where his grandparents lived near Grandora.
David attended his schooling in Saskatoon. He began at the Victoria School until grade 8 then completed his education at the Walter Murray High School. After completing school, David moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he would make many friends and begin a lifelong passion for motorcycles.
David's fascination for vehicles began at an early age. In fact, most of the pictures of David were usually taken in front of something with a motor in it. As David grew older, this fascination became more orientated on bikes and he would eventually share this passion with many of his "brothers" and eventually join a club. It was around this same time that he met his future bride, Leone Patricia Grace Russell. David and Leone were married on April 5, 1980 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and started their life together as a family.
Along with Lee's children, Dean & Cheryl and granddaughter Crystal, the family moved to Yellowknife, N.W.T. where David would begin working for Norman Wells as a mechanic. Soon after, they built a home on Pontoon Lake where David did most of the building himself. He enjoyed his mechanics job and decided to pursue his journeyman ticket.
Missing the ride, the family decided to move to warmer weather on Vancouver Island at Fanny Bay. Being closer to family here they made many happy memories and more lasting friendships. Eventually they would move to Prince George, B.C. for a few years before returning to the island. David worked at Laidlaw for the school district as a heavy duty mechanic on the school busses and occasionally would have to drive as well. They enjoyed their time here for many years but eventually decided to sell everything and retire to a vacation trailer which would allow them to start to travel more.
After travelling to Arizona, David and Lee stopped in Alberta to visit family and ended up deciding to stay. David took up work with his grandson-in-law Nathan chasing the pipeline.
On September 15, 2008 Lee passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta.
Following Lee's passing, David stayed with his granddaughter Crystal and her husband, Nathan at their home near Kessler Hall by Hughenden, Alberta. David continued to work as a mechanic and he started Kessler Towing and Repair where he would fix bikes and rebuild old cars. During this same time, David would become a great grandfather to three of his favourite followers; Hayden, Sawyer and Aurora.
David had a second family here as well, better known as the "Shack Family". This was a group that reflected the many values that David held which was love your family, friends and your motorcycle.
Everywhere David went he made great friends and had a good time. He will be missed by many and never forgotten.
David passed away peacefully on February 16, 2017 in Provost, Alberta at the age of 64 years.
He will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Cheryl Zeller and Dean Backus; grandchildren, Crystal (Nathan) Ekman, Jesse Zeller, Rylee Heimdal and Jenna Heimdal; great grandchildren, Hayden, Sawyer and Aurora; siblings, Art, Duane, Nori & Don; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
David was predeceased by his wife, Leone and his parents, Harold & Josephine.
