Obituary of Norbert Leibel
Please share a memory of Norbert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Norbert Leibel was born on October 24, 1933 to Valentine and Anastasia Leibel of Denzil, Saskatchewan. He was the eldest of 14 children.
Growing up in a family of 14 wasn't always easy, but there was always an abundance of love to go around and the attitude was always the more the merrier.
After graduating from Denzil High School, Norbert obtained his Teaching Certificate in Saskatoon. His first teaching position was at Gramlich School in St Donatus, where he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Brosinsky (Elsie). They exchanged vows at the St. Donatus parish on August 11, 1958.
Norbert held various teaching positions until March, 1966, at which time they moved to the Leibel family farm at Denzil, Saskatchewan, where they raised their 7 daughters. Living among 8 women, Dad always referred to himself as "a rose among the thorns".
Over the years Norbert was active in the Denzil community - curling, umping baseball, 4-H Club, Parish Council, School Board, Recreation Board, Knights of Columbus, Meridian Futures Board, and Councillor for the RM of Eye Hill for 29 years. He continued to sit on various Boards on behalf of the RM, even after he left his position with them.
Norbert and Elsie farmed as well as running a catering business, Norbert's Country Catering, from 1982 until their retirement in 1995. Their slogan was "It's Leibel to be Good".
Norbert loved taking his girls camping, travelling, playing solitaire on his computer, good food and Lamb's rum. For Dad, the trip was as much a part of the holiday as the destination. He taught us to take the time to smell the roses at every opportunity, by stopping at every sight along the way.
Most of all Dad loved his family. His happy place was being surrounded by his siblings, his girls and their families. He loved it when we all got together and had lots of fun and shenanigans! We will always remember his low booming speaking and singing voice, his gruff loveable nature, and his great BIG hugs! We love you, Dad and will miss you forever.
"Every man dies - Not every man really lives."
Surrounded by his family, Norbert passed away on November 30, 2017 in Olds, Alberta at the age of 84 years.
Norbert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elsie, his children, Donna (Ted Rodych - Stefanie, Dane and Adelynn); Debra (Richard Diamond - Tyler; Brendan, Eli, Max and Jett); Theresa (Ron Loehndorf - Justin, Alexis, Trey, Chase; Jarret, Aimee, Raevyn and Cooper; Jenna, Brennon and Paige); Janet (Mervin Bosch); Nancy (Sean Young - Raquel, Ryan, Kaius and Brodie; Robyn, Patrick and Blaze; Jake, Jasmine and Piper); Amy (Terry Eichinger - Bennett and Madison); Trish (Chad Hauck - Everett and Finley) and numerous brothers (in law), sisters (in law), nieces and nephews.
