Obituary of Victoria Stang
Please share a memory of Victoria to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Victoria Stang was born on August 2, 1920, the third child of 19 (2 died in infancy) born to Joseph A. and Clara (Gartner) Stang. She grew up on the family farm in the Falconhurst School district southeast of Macklin. After leaving school, Vicki worked at home helping with her siblings.
In 1944 she started work as housekeeper for Fr. Joseph Sluga who had got to know the family when preaching a mission at St. Peter's parish at Cosine. She lived in Handel, Lancer, Denzil, Macklin and Scott when Fr. served the parishes in those communities and made many friends along the way. When Fr. Sluga died suddenly in 1966, Vicki moved home to Macklin, then worked at St. Joseph's rectory in Winnipeg where Fr. Robert was for a few months. After working with Pauline at Johnson Canyon for a summer, Victoria came home and began working at St. Joseph's hospital where she served those in need of care until 1984 when she retired to take care of her mother. During this time, she lived with her mother, Clara and her brother, Alex.
Music was a large part of Vicki's life: She started singing in the choir at St. Peter's when she was 14 years old with her father as choir director. She also was involved in the parishes she served with Fr. as organist and choir member. She played the organ and sang at many, many weddings and funerals. Vicki was a long-serving, active member of the CWL in the parishes where she lived.
Vicki lived on her own following the death of her mother in 1988 until January 2008 when she moved into assisted living at the Villa Marie. In 2014 she moved to long term care at St. Joseph's.
Vicki loved to entertain, cook and bake. She loved trying out new recipes. Most of us have experienced her warm and wonderful hospitality. She never passed up an opportunity to socialize with family and friends. Another of Vicki's loves was fashion. Shopping was an enjoyable pastime which she missed when her independence and mobility became limited. Vicki dressed well and had a beautiful wardrobe, especially dresses, which she was so proud of. Vicki also did some traveling which she greatly enjoyed with trips across Canada and the U.S. and to the Bahamas. Vicki was a fiesty and skilled 'Buck' player, playing at every opportunity.
Vicki was the 'go to' sister and aunt. From bringing Christmas gifts for her younger siblings while working for Fr. Sluga to providing endless treats and baked goodies for her many nieces and nephews, cooking Christmas dinners, hosting family get-togethers, Vicki could always be counted on, which she did with grace and good cheer.
She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Hagel and Jeanette (Leonard) Stang and brothers, Mike (Isabella), Tom (Cecile) and Larry (Frances); sisters-in-law: Maureen Stang, Magdalen Stang and Beatrice Stang; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and friends.
Victoria is predeceased by her father, Joseph (1964) and her mother Clara (1988), her siblings: Josephine (Joseph) Rissling, Herman (Rose), Benedict (Katie), Catherine, Frank, Joseph, George, Pauline, Alex, Fr. Bob, and Arthur; sister-in-law, Dianna Stang, brother-in-law, Anthony Hagel.
