I was saddened and shocked to hear the passing of a great great man. I was fortunate enough to spend time with Gary in Wainwright as a young buck. We shared a lot of great days, nights, weekends together. I can remember late night poker games with Gary, Dave and a bunch of other people. There was so much fun to be had. He always had a smile on his face and if you didnt, it wasnt long before you did. You always knew when Gary was in the room. His voice was unmistakable and usually a little louder than everyone elses. He was the kind of guy you always wanted around. Always joking, always laughing. He left this world way to early and will be missed by all that has had the pleasure to meet and spend time with him. I give my condolences to his family as you lost someone that is truly special. Rest In Peace Gary.

To all of the Allin family (past and present). Our heart felt sorrow goes out to your family. As great friends of the Allin family while living in Wainwright, we enjoyed many family get togethers as well as numerous adult social events. Gary always had a smile on his face, always had the great "one-liners" and was a fantastic two stepper on the dance floor. Numerous late night Kinsmen meetings, hockey and golf road trips will forever leave a happy memory on my mind. Thanks for your special friendship. Cheers my friend. Geoff & Leslie Carpenter

We send our heartfelt condolences to the Allin family. We pray for peace and strength at this time for you all. Our family was wonderful friends with Roy and Millie Allin when we all lived in vermilion. We watched many games of hockey that Gary and Bob Clouston and friends played together growing up. Gary always had a smile on his face and he loved his family so very much. We spent many evenings with his mom and dad and played kanasta into the wee hours of the morning, Gary would come home and always be amazed on how long we sat and played this crazy game of cards. Sorry for your loss, he was a fine young man

I was fortunate enough to meet Gary in the Wainwright Kinsmen club in the mid 80's. We became very good friends perhaps because we were opposites (he was shorter, I was taller; I was overweight, he was fit and athletic; he was outgoing, and I was reserved; he was an Edmonton fan; I was a Calgary fan). Or maybe we became friends just because he was a good guy and always fun to be around. Over the next 30 years, Gary provided me with awesome memories that I will cherish forever. Here are a few of my memories.
In August 1988, Gary and Brenda went with us to Montana to golf for a week. We took my company car with a luggage rack on the roof, and spent the first night in Cardston. The next day we were planning to take "The Road to the Sun" which is a twisty mountain pass into Montana. Carol made me promise not to let Gary drive over the pass, but, before I knew it, we were in the pass and he was driving. Well, Carol had a very uncomfortable ride on the floor in the back seat with Brenda. Carol is nervous driving through the mountains normally, but, with Gary driving and pointing at this and that, peering at sites over the cliff, she was terrified. After stopping at the top of the pass for lunch and checking out Clark Griswold's car, I drove on into Montana.
We decided to take an evening dinner cruise on Flathead Lake. We had a few minutes to kill before the cruise, so, we went into a pub for a beer across the road from the boat. While I was in the washroom, Gary and Carol spotted Lanny McDonald outside the pub. While Gary ran out to tell Lanny he had to meet a Flames fan, Carol yelled at me through the bathroom door to hurry up. I assumed the boat was getting ready to leave so rushed through the job and ran out to get a picture with Lanny. I think Gary was perhaps even more excited than I. After taking the picture, I walked away and noticed my fly was wide open. All the way home we laughed about developing the picture of me and my hero when we get home only to find my fly wide open.
We also stopped in Kalispell one day so the girls could do a little shopping. Gary and I foolishly thought that the shopping would be quick so we decided to pop into Moose's Saloon while we waited. We had a great time visiting with a biker and tossing peanut shells on the floor. Well, four hours later Carol and Brenda came to pick us up and were shocked that we were drunk. I can still remember the look on Gary's face when Carol slapped my chest and my cigarettes flew 6 feet in the air.
For many years, Gary and I attended our weekly Monday afternoon 'therapy session' at the Wainwright Legion. The attendees at these sessions varied, but normally ran from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, in time for a couple of jugs. At times there were large groups, and sometimes it was Gary and I. It was at one of these therapy sessions where one of the boys pointed out that since they were quite short, it was very difficult to use the urinal without getting back spray in the face. Well, since Gary had a similar stature, that comment of course led to us wondering if he had the same problem with the urinals. We debated hanging goggles for him in the washroom but settled on buying him glasses with wipers instead.
At another session, Gary must have jumped out of the car and left it in neutral because when we went to leave, we found it had rolled backwards and stopped just before hitting the Legion. He always seemed to be very lucky.
The Legion allowed children in the mess until 7:00 pm so often we had the kids with us. The five of them had their pop and played the ring game. A rod stuck out from the wall about 2 feet and at the end was hung a ring on a length of string. The object of the game was to hook the ring on a hook on the wall. It wasn't easy, but, the kids played it so much they had it mastered. How many kids can say they celebrated birthday parties at the Legion? I'm sure all the kids have some great memories from the Legion.
Rick Greig and I went over to Gary's to watch the CFL Western Final in November 1991. Rick and I were of course cheering for the Stamps and Gary was pulling for the Esks. Well, it was a very close, tense game and at one point Rick couldn't watch and was huddled with his eyes closed on the stairway in the living room. Gary was crawling on his hands and knees across the living room attempting to tackle Danny Barrett as he threw a spectacular 66 yard touchdown pass to Peewee Smith late in the fourth quarter to give the Stampeders a comeback 38 - 36 victory.
For many years, Gary participated in our annual hockey pool and our road trip to an Edmonton Oiler game. One trip was particularly memorable as we had taken Gary's van with the condition that someone else would drive home. Apparently the game must have gone into overtime because it was quite late when Graham Thomas dropped Gary off at home and he told Graham to just take the van home; he would get it the next day. Unfortunately, Gary forgot that his house keys were on the set of keys now on its way to Graham's house. Undaunted, Gary managed to squeeze in through the bathroom window, bounced off the toilet and tumbled to the floor. This was followed by Alisha's announcement: 'Dad's home'.
We also had poker games for awhile and Gary took his turn at hosting the game. About six of us showed up at his place after supper and he jokingly reminded us that we had to be gone by 7 am as Brenda would be coming home from work. Yeah, you guessed it; lots of laughs and very little money changed hands prior to us packing up the cards and poker chips shortly before 7 am.
I can't believe I have now forgotten how tall Gary was; we talked about it so often. What I do remember is that when he was asked it was always 5 foot something "with a perm".
Gary went to a lot of football games. The 2002 Grey Cup game was held in Edmonton with Edmonton and Montreal playing for the cup. Of course it was cold, but, not bitter for Edmonton. The Butter Ripple liquer and the Allouettes victory made it a little sweeter too. Following the game we met Gary and some other friends at the Norwood Legion for a few pops.
With Gary and I both living in Edmonton, we continued to meet after Eskimo games and of course had many happy hours together. At one of those happy hours at our home, we also invited Kim Davidson. Gary worked his charm and the rest is history.
I truly regret that over the last few years Gary and I did not keep in touch with each other. Carol and I will never forgot the wonderful times we had with Gary at our homes, Kinsmen events, hockey and football games, coaching minor hockey, golfing, and of course, our 'therapy sessions'.

Many, many good times in Kinsmen and Kinettes...sorry to hear of his passing. Gary liked to “visit,” and host his open house between Christmas and New Years at the clinic....he would also be the first to call on your birthday, courtesy the local community birthday calendar. May fond memories warm your hearts. Kelly Blanch, Red Deer, Alberta

I am in shock and sadness to think you are gone my friend. It was way to long since we last enjoyed a laugh together. I'll never forget your first day of school in Vermilion when you were standing at the front of the class not knowing where to sit. I came up to you and put my arm around you and asked if you wanted to sit with the boys or girls. In a low voice you said boys and from that day on we were inseparable . We spent endless days at each other's house playing forts or any and every sport. We were best friends all through school enjoying life to the fullest. Line mates in hockey for at least ten years celebrating so many goals and championships. I can still see your smiling face in my minds eye! It's sad to think we lost track of staying in touch and never knew each other's family. It seems our high school friends will be with us forever. So long for now my friend I will see you on the other side. I always loved you but never spoke the words. Thanks for the memories, Mark
