Please share a memory of Alex to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alexander Tony Kohlman was born February 24, 1928 to Lawrence Kohlman and Agatha (Schwab), in Macklin, Saskatchewan. Alex grew up in the Grosswerder district and attended Kokesch school. Growing up on the farm and working with his Dad and brothers, Dad developed a love of the land, cattle and especially hogs. Dad purchased the farm from Grandpa in 1951. In the same year he married Clementine (Stang), the love of his life. Dad continued farming and drove the local school bus for a number of years. In the late 70's, he decided to turn the reigns of the farm over to his eldest son. Alex continued to farm while working in the oil patch as a contract operator. In time, Dad and Mom moved to Macklin and retired. Dad spent his retirement years helping out as caretaker for St. Mary's Church, while always keeping an impeccable garden and putting his incredible wood working skills to use by making many wonderful keepsakes for his children and grandchildren, and of course his love of cooking followed him throughout the years. Even after they moved to the Hillcrest Lodge in Provost, Alberta in 2007, and Dad no longer had a kitchen of his own, he loved to organize noodle, Kraut strudel and Kraut soup making days in his daughter's kitchen whenever possible. During this second retirement, Dad also began fundraising and assisted in work bees for the maintenance and upkeep of St. Peter's Cemetery. In 2017, Dad retired for the last time and moved with Mom into the Long Term Care Home in Provost, where he continued to play an active role in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's lives. Dad was full of energy, had a tremendous zest for life and a willingness to learn new things. Even up to the last few months of his life, with his eyesight failing, he was excited about his brand new voice activated telephone and couldn't wait to have each of his children and grandchildren and friends programmed and on speed dial, as he loved more than anything to visit. Dad passed away surrounded by the love of his family on January 6, 2019 at the Provost Health Centre - Long Term Care at the age of 90 years. Dad will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife of 67 years, Clem; children, Jim (Janice), Dan (Carol); Vicki (Wayne Sletten); Keith (Lori), as well as 13 grandchildren and18 great grandchildren. Dad was predeceased by his infant son, Gerhard; daughter in law, Pat; and all of his brothers and sisters. Rest in peace dear Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Go-go. You were our guardian on earth and are now our guardian angel in heaven whom we know will be watching over all of us. You will always have a place in our hearts. Love you always and forever.
