Obituary of Joseph John Gartner
Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dad grew up a country boy, living on a few different family farms, with 14 other crazy, wonderful siblings. Those days were both difficult and rewarding which taught him many valuable lessons, gave him a good sense of morals, and shaped him into the caring man we all knew and loved.
Family meant everything to Dad, and he was always there for us kids. After losing Mom, he filled the role of both parents and sacrificed daily to give us what we needed. He was so proud of his grandkids and enjoyed spending time with them at every family get together. He raised his glass and toasted all of us, with a shot or two of Jägermeister, on many of these occasions.
The little store Mom and Dad named J & S Confectionery (Joe, Janice, Jenine – Shirley, Sheldon, Shelly) became his life. For the 37 years he owned it, he poured his heart and soul into making it a success. He loved it so much that he continued to work there for another 15 years after his retirement. He was a very respected businessman and his untold generosity helped many over the years. It will always be known as Joe’s candy store.
Dad approached leukemia the same way he did all the other hardships in his life. He faced it head on and fought every day. We were blessed to walk with him on this journey as even the hard days were good days for us. We will forever remember holding his hands as God called him home.
Dad, your strength, love, wisdom, and your amazing sense of humor will live on in us forever. You have given us gifts that are more precious than anything in this world. Thank you for being our Dad!
Dad leaves behind his wife and dance partner, Vera; his daughters, Janice and her children, Jarrett (great grandchildren, Blake and Zoe) and Dani; Jenine (Alvin) and their children, Cody and Kelli; Shelly (Vance) and their children, Chance and Hailey; daughter-in-law, Karen (†Buddy) and their boys, Tyler and Brayden.
A Private Family Graveside Service will take place at the Lakeview Cemetery at a later date.
