When I was about 14, I stayed at Lornie's place in Metiskow for a month during summer holidays with my brother Michael. Lornie gave us free run of the place, so we had a great time. Perfect for a 14 year-old. He always treated us as adults and was like an older friend or brother. Always fun, never critical. Endless patience with us. We always got excited when we were told that Lornie was coming to visit our family in St. Albert. He'll always be remembered by the Edwards boys.

I will miss my cousin Lorny but do have some memories that are just unshakeable. One in particular was when Lorny tried living on Vancouver Island. He had been looking for a cheap place to rent and came across an old cabin located on a local farm. He said it needed a little work to "fix it up nice" and asked if I would help him do it. Well, we arrived and this cabin had been gutted by fire! It stank like a wet down fire pit but the location was just what Lorny loved about it.
We began a low budget reno and worked day and night until completed. It looked real fine. The only hitch was it smelled just as bad as the first day we walked in!! But Lorny loved that little cabin for the brief time he lived there.

My favorite memory of Lorne is the time he took me duck hunting. I had never even held a gun. He gave me a "HONKIN HUGE RIFLE" to shoot. We were close to the water hiding in the tall grass. I shot the rifle and flew back into the water (it felt like I shot my arm off). Lorne thought it was hilarious. Needless to say I never went hunting again ha ha! Thanks for some fun memories Lorne. Rest in peace.

In the summer of 1977, my brother Mark and I stayed at Lornie's house in Metiskow with our dirt bikes for the entire month of August. We both felt a tremendous amount of freedom staying with him away from our parents that summer. That, and running an endless tab of pop and chocolate bars at Uncle Dave's store. It was also the summer of the towns Homecoming Celebration (parade and rodeo), so there were plenty of cousins and relatives on hand. I think we had also just gotten back from visiting Uncle John and Auntie Alice in Victoria, making the summer even more memorable.
With my sometimes rambunctious ways as a kid, Lorne affectionately nicknamed me "Michaely Johnson" (which I am still sometimes refered to by my brothers)...for that summer I spent a night in the hospital with a concussion after jumping out of the back of moving pickup truck full of kids at Capt. Ayre Lake. Upon my release, I then proceeded to take a fall while riding a horse at Larry and Pauline's (Maull's farm). Yes, I was a handful at times. (lol)
At any rate, for the Homecoming's Greased Pig Contest...Lornie won! So us city boys had a pet pig for the rest of the summer. :) We had a lot of fun with Lornie, as well as riding our dirt bikes on the endless countryside surrounding Metiskow. And of course, he also took us hunting. In the short time that we stayed with Lorne that summer, he had a positive and lasting impact of us Edwards boys...he will not be forgotten.

My memories of 'Lornie' are those of times when things were simpler and a Honda 300 Dream was as cool as ice in Alaska. I looked up to Lorne and hoped to be just like him when I was older. He was our 'Fonzie'. Maybe it's not the smartest thing to admit, but Lorne and Gord Edwards were all I had to base my teen years on.Yah, I know it sounds crazy but I looked up to these two wing nuts... I really did. Lorne was always willing to give me and my friends a place to crash after hitch-hiking from St. Albert to Metiskow to go goose hunting. He would offer us boiled Coca-Cola and potato chips for breakfast; weird, but we loved it! Lorne assured me he had my back if I ever needed it and I never once doubted him; I knew he'd be there if I ever needed him to be. Come to think of it, he was probably the closest I had to a big brother. Lorne had some rough times in his life but I know deep down his heart and soul were always in the right place. I'll miss you Lorne, I really will. Our dad's will be happy that you'll once again be hunting together. Save a spot for me. We will meet again.

I have many stories and memories of my cousin Lorne . One that always comes to mind is the dunking that my sister Sharol and I had to endure every time our big boy cousins came to visit.( Which was often)Maybe brother Robin used to get it also? (Larry, you know what I'm talking about! ) When we noticed that uncle Dave was driving in the yard we knew that today we would get a green, slimy unwanted bath in the cattle trough. Haha!!. Im not sure what the thrill was, other than they could get away with it. I will always remember Lorne as a fun loving, kind hearted, freckled faced boy. The outdoors hunting, fishing and trapping with his brothers and dad was his first love. Although I never really new Lorne during his adult life I know his fondest memories had to be those carefree times with family and friends in Metisko and Cadogan. Gone, but never forgotten.

I rember Lorne as a happy little boy bringing my mom a wild goose early one morning before she was up. He then proceeded to pluck it on her bed. She could never get mad at him. She loved him as her own. Lorne was happiest when hunting or fishing with his dad. My memories of Lorne will always be of a happy, kind always helpful boy.
