Obituary of Donald Joseph Hoberg
Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald Joseph Hoberg was born in Provost, Alberta on June 24, 1926 to John and Ella Hoberg. A younger brother for Luther and would become an older brother to Dagny, Lois and Janet.
Don grew up and took his schooling in Provost, walking to school, up hill, both ways. Sometimes he rode his horse. He often talked of the trouble they got into on the way to and from school. Growing up on the farm gave him a strong work ethic that he carried with him.
Don went off to work in Northern Alberta and BC and had many stories to tell of his time working with the logging crews. He eventually came home to run the farm with his brother, Luther.
Donald married Aline Casavant in 1964. John and Shelly joined the union in 1966 and 1969. Don had great pride in his family and farm and managed to find time to balance both. They had exchange employees throughout the years and kept in touch with many of them for years after. He always found time to help the neighbors and enjoyed his time spent working, socializing, or getting into trouble with each of them. He was an avid member of the Kinsmen Club and supporter of the Lutheran Church.
Aline passed away in 1995. Don continued farming until he retired to a house in Provost in 2004. Shortly after retiring from the farm, he found time to connect with an old friend. Alice finally convinced him to join her in Leduc and they lived happily for 15 years together.
As his memory started to fail, he couldn’t tell you what he had for breakfast, didn’t know if he had lunch but he always recognized his family when they came to visit. During the visits he would ask, “How are the cows? How the crops? Is it dry? Are you getting enough rain? How are the cows? Is it dry? Crops must be suffering. Are you getting any rain?” He was always concerned about the farm and wanted to know how everyone was doing.
Donald passed away peacefully just hours before his 95th birthday, on June 23, 2021 at Points West in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
He leaves to mourn, his special friend, Alice; son, John Hoberg (Corine); daughter, Shelly (Kevin) Gallaway; Alice’s sons, David, Gary, Randy and their families; sisters, Lois and Janet; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; as well as many friends and neighbors who will cherish the memories they have of a wonderful man.
He was predeceased by his wife, Aline; parents, John and Ella; brother, Luther; and sister, Dagny.
A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Skyline Cemetery.
