Obituary of Winnifred Hillis

Please share a memory of Winnifred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Winnifred Marguerite was born November 5, 1910 to Reuben and Martha Rebecca (Ireland) Martin in a small bungalow near the Braden house in the south west end of Macklin, Saskatchewan. On January 20, 2013 Winnifred passed away at the St. Joseph's Health Centre at the age of 102 years. Winnifred grew up as an only child. After graduating from high school Winnifred went to the University of Saskatchewan in the fall of 1928 taking Household Science until the hard times of 1930 forced her premature withdrawl from this area of higher learning. Winnifred and William "Bill" Edward Hillis were married in June 1934. Their first child William Irvin Hillis was born October 17, 1935 in Macklin. The second child of this union, Gerald Martin Hillis was born October 6, 1939. In 1977 Winnifred was widowed when Bill died from complications of the heart, she has been living in Macklin since that time. Winnifred has always had a strong interest in community and the United Church and remained active in curling into her 60's as well as very involved in the Senior's Drop-In Centre. She has enjoyed a very good reputation as a cook and mother, but her greatest accomplishment has been her success as a gardener and horticulturist. She has grown gladiolas and grafted apple trees with excellent success and the most astonishing thing to her family was eating home-grown grapes in Macklin! Winnifred will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Chev (Florence) and Gerald (Brenda); 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as extended family and neighbors.
