Obituary of Sharlene Faye Young

Please share a memory of Sharlene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Sharlene was born at the General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta on June 13, 1964, to the proud parents, Roger and Fay Jickling.

After 5 years of city living Roger decided it was time to get back to the farm life and so the move to the farm just 5 miles south of Provost, Alberta was made, and a new chapter began.

Sharlene’s love of animals started very young. From Guinea pigs, rabbits, horses and anything else in between. If a stray wandered into the yard, it was now home.

She attended Provost Public Elementary School and made many friends, which most became lifelong friends, as once you met Sharlene you never wanted to let go. In High School she enjoyed hanging out with her peers and had an amazing opportunity to take a class trip to Paris, France, so off she flew with her friends and classmates to experience a bit of the French culture. She loved every minute of that trip and cherished those memories. She joined the local theatre group and Candy Stripers at the Provost Hospital which she continued until graduation in 1982.

After graduating she was off to take a course in Theatre Arts in Calgary and returned to Provost where she worked as a nurse’s aide at the long-term care in the Provost Hospital. She later moved to Red Deer where she enrolled in the Theatre Arts program at Red Deer College. She then met the love of her life, Carl Young. They married and eventually moved back to Provost where they had three beautiful boys.

Sharlene had many passions in life and was always up for trying something new. Making people feel good was a top priority for her, she attended many courses through the years learning new techniques of Energy Healing Modalities which helped many people. Her love of nature, from gardening to birds, she was especially passionate about the Blue Bird Trail that her and her dear friend, Lois looked after. Sharlene had so many talents from crafting to baking, Christmas time was a favorite for everyone as she made the best fudge ever and she always looked forward to the annual Lefse making party with relatives and friends.

Sharlene passed away on September 28, 2023 at the Provost Health Centre at the age of 59 years.

Sharlene is survived by her husband of 33 years, Carl Young; sons, Patrick Joseph Young (Whitney) and the incredible granddaughter, Cheria; John Roger Young (Shayna) and the most awesome grandsons, Liam John and Rowan Jack; and son, Carl Marc Young; brother, Keni Jickling (Jason); sister, Kathleen Lauritzen; nephews, Travis and Mathew; brother in-law, John M Young (Yvonne) and nephew, Tommy; sister in-law, Alison Jacobson (Trent); niece, Jazdyn; nephews, Gage, Christopher and Connor; brother in-law, Shawn M Young (Donna); nephews, Andrew and Mitchel; mother in-law, Jeanette Mary Rose Young; cousin, Bernie and Tammy Sikkema and family; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

She was predeceased by her father, Roger Jickling; mother, Fay Jickling; grandparents, Lawrence and Alice Jickling; Weldon and Mabel Mundle; father in-law, John Albert Young and grandparents, William and Jeanette Tisdale and Wes and Myrtal Young.
