I was a substitute teacher at Glaslyn school when Porter was young. What I remember most about him was his constant energy, great athleticism (he loved playing soccer with my son at recess) and, of course, his adorable face and curly hair. Porter had loads of character...which I was drawn to. I was so surprised and happy to see him back at GCS this winter, standing at the office counter, registering himself for Grade 10. He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye, and said, "Hey... I know you..." and I said the same back to him, but I guessed the wrong name... calling him River. (I always got the boys mixed up!) Anyways, he ended up in my Visual Arts class and myself and co-teacher, Coel Nordell, soon learned that Porter was a very artistic young man. He particularly enjoyed the wood burning project assigned to him and worked at his "alligator" with great focus and attention to detail. (see the attached picture of Porter working on it; all he had left was to burn in his name; it turned out great!) Porter left this wonderful piece of art at school and we displayed it in the art room. The day before his funeral, I went to the school and grabbed it, knowing that Porter's mother, Jen, would most likely love to have it. She is now holding it close to her heart and I am so happy that I could give her back a piece of her son! May God bless you and comfort you, Jen... and you too, River.
